The Fight for Joy

The fight for joy

Joy. Joy is what keeps us going. It’s our engine.

Let me explain. We all have an internal desire to be happy and content. That desire is only human. It’s not a strange desire considering we were created by God and God is to be glorified. We like God In whose image we were created want to be happy and enjoy some glory. The problem is this happiness is mostly evasive because we look for it in the wrong places.

Most of us don’t study the syllabus of life and understand the paradox that we are most satisfied and happy when we glorify God. This is the teaching of Christian Hedonism. That “God’s ultimate goal in the world – his glory and our deepest desire – to be happy are one and the same because God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. Not only is God the supreme source of satisfaction for the human soul, but God himself is glorified by our being satisfied in him. Therefore, our pursuit of joy in him is essential. But I’ve come to realize that we have a deeper problem. We don’t truly know ourselves inside out. What do I mean? We are unaware of our true identities and capabilities. Left to our own selves, we do not realize that we are little mortal beings created by an immortal God. The same applies to knowledge and power and strength. Our capabilities compared to Gods are like a drop in the ocean. Because we do not realize this, we often burn out physically and emotionally because we take on more and more load operating on the world systems that tell us we can multitask and take everything on.

I’m writing mainly from an emotional angle. What we end up realizing is that we are weak. Clay jars carry the treasure of the gospel (2 Cor 4:7) and we have limitations that we can only survive under and stretch from because God’s strength is perfected in our weaknesses (2 Cor 19:9-10). The result of our constant strain under emotional weights and the impulsive addition of even more is despair, sadness and depression which we can also call discontentment.

I’m trying to draw the connection between depression and joy. What is the solution to depression and sadness? Fight for your Joy. Easy to say but hard to carry out.

That is what my book is about – Fighting to maintain your joy. The joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). When we step out of God’s joy we become our undiluted weak selves.

Fighting for your joy includes prayers, a meditation on God’s word, reminding yourself of truths, constantly working to tame your mind and feeding yourself truths amongst other things. These are the things you will find in my short 28 paged book. This is a summary of my work. I hope you find light and remember to focus on Jesus.

In the timeless priceless words of Helen H. Lemmel, Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim. In the Light of his glory and grace.
