So apparently there is a debate about this song. Many people think this song is ridiculous and they often say, ‘of course Mary knew’. Me, I think Mary did know some things. Yes. But to a certain degree. I mean humanly speaking – because let’s not forget that Mary was human- so many things must have hit her hard. I have a couple of reasons.
Mary Had No Choice
I want you to understand that Mary did not get to decide if she would carry the baby Jesus. Yes, it was a great honour to carry and give birth to the son of God; Jesus Christ. It was really great especially for us, but sometimes it must have hurt a lot and it definitely was not easy. Because to love is to open yourself up to pain as well. I think we tend to over-romanticize the whole thing forgetting what it must have felt like first of all, getting pregnant out of wedlock (Yes I said wedlock lol deal with it). Sure we know it was immaculate conception but her neighbours may not have necessarily believed that and the folks in the next village probably didn’t either after hearing the gist. Next, Mary still lived in Israel that adhered to the practices of the Torah. Let me put it into perspective: if Joseph had outed Mary, she would have been stoned to death. Thank God for that warning dream, right? Then, there is the fact that Mary gave birth to a child who according to society said and did really weird things.
She Was A Mother
Mary was told that her son would be the Messiah but nothing can prepare you for losing a child. I’m not a mom but I can only imagine. I think we forget that while we think of Jesus as King, she always saw him as her child. So watching him get slandered, beat, betrayed, killed was definitely not easy. I have come to see firsthand how seriously mothers take their children from the women in my family and just how my own mother doesn’t take me to play. If they could take their children’s place to spare them suffering, they would do so in a heartbeat. But Mary had to deal with the understanding that this was Jesus’ destiny all the while mourning for her child.
She Birthed The Messiah
One of the reasons the Jews at the time must have had difficulty accepting Jesus was because they felt the Messiah would not come the way he did. How would he be born in a manger? Why would he be a carpenter’s son? Why would he suffer death on a cross? Yet, here he was. Doing so many things and shaking things up. Bringing about a revolution. Turning water into wine. Calming storms. Raising people from the dead. Casting out demons. Healing people and on the Sabbath! Each time something like this would happen, the bible would say ‘But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart often’ Luke 2:19. So when this song says:
…Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you…
I don’t think it’s a silly question to ask because we tend to ‘know’ a lot of things with our heads but not with our hearts. And I think that’s what this song is really trying to get at. Like yes, Mary, you know but do you know-know? I don’t know about you but I think it is something to think about. Let me know what you think about the song in the comments below 🙂
