Fantastic Build-up play, Brick wall defense, the perfect wing-backs – This Super Eagles team is becoming something big

It was a draw but everyone loved what they saw.

Nigeria let a one-goal lead slip as they drew in a friendly against Brazil.

Joe Aribo had given Gernet Rohr’s side the advantage in the first half, but the Brazilian’s came back in the second half and netted their equalizer thanks to Casemiro.

Becoming Something Great

Joe Aribo, Victor Osimehn, Samuel Chukwueze. Make no bones about it, Nigeria has one of the very best young attackers in world football.

OMG, WHAT AN APPALLING PERFORMANCE BY IWOBI. NO IMAGINATION. NO IDEAS. THE BACK FOUR HAD MORE POSSESSION IN THE MATCH THAN HIM. PASS BACK, PLAY SAFE. WHAT A DISGRACE.

As we’ve seen over countless tournaments recently, midfield wins trophies even if your defense isn’t all that, having a creative midfield helps. Think about Manchester City in the premier league, France at the last World Cup or Portugal at the previous European Championships.

You don’t have to have a world-beating strikeforce to lift silverware, but you sure do have to have a creative midfield – especially the number 10 role.

Iwobi, right now, is shambolic in that particular area and need to buckle up before next Cup of Nations, or else, the number 10 position in the midfield may be up for grabs.

Brick wall of Giants

The Brazilians couldn’t just get passed the Nigerian backline of Williams Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, Jamilu Collins, and Chidozie Awaziem.

The Center-backs

The best sight of the game – unlike the performance of Iwobi, W. Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi proved to be true senior players.
Ekong, in particular, was very impressive against Brazil – wearing the captain band – he looked fearless, forcing the Brazilians to take aimless shots.
For as long as Gernet Rohr has been manager, the defender has seemed to be reliable at the back – apart from the own goal against Algeria- He has proved to be a First-tier defender and a suitable partner for S.Ajayi.

The Wing-backs

Chidozie Awaziem (RWB), Jamilu Collins (LWB), Both perform the same job in this Super Eagles team, picking up the ball from defense and looking to join the build-up play, dominating the flanks, giving the wings – Chukwueze and Simon – chance to be able to cut-in to the 18 yard-box giving the opposition defense something more to worry about.
The hight of Awaziem and Collins also proved very useful as they were always joining with Ekong and Ajayi to form a brick wall in defense.
As a result, Nigeria looked very solid at the back as the Brazilians struggled to pick out anyone, which resulted in aimless crosses.
The wingbacks showed to be players, who could break the lines and make something happen in the transition between defense and attack.
Rohr is a forward-thinking manager who has the right ideas about the game and is showing he has what it takes to build a team.

NDIDI WAS TACKLING EVERYTHING, HE WAS EVERYWHERE, NIGERIA HAS ONE OF THE BEST DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS IN THE WORLD AND HE’S JUST 22.

Just not their night

From what we have seen, certainly, Nigeria will qualify for Cup of Nations 2021.
But when the likes of Alex Iwobi who didn’t perform, you can safely say that this wasn’t Nigerian’s night.
But the boys were impressive – that could be down to preparation, a proper scouting system and attitude from the players – or a mix of all three.
But whatever reason, this was a return to the old Super Eagles. The Kanu Nwankwo Super Eagles, The Jay-Jay Okocha Super Eagles, the Julius Aghahowa Super Eagles.
